What gives a television program geek cred? Well, for the most part the rules are the same as for movies: we're looking for smart, entertaining escapism here. A guy in a rubber monster suit with bad fx wins over a tear-jerker story of lost friendship every time, hands-down, I don't care how good or bad the plot and acting are. (Unless possibly if the friend is an alien.)There is one important difference between movies and TV, though: in TV, the bar is set much lower. TV shows are mostly funded by advertising revenue, which means they can’t stray too far from the mainstream or they’ll lose their sponsors. They also have lower budgets, tighter deadlines and more airtime to fill. So, yeah, they’re just not as good as movies usually. Then again, for cheap entertainment the shows listed below are hard to beat.
Plus, watching anything from this list will instantly add to your geek cred.
Of course, your individual tastes may vary: no two geeks are the same. So I have also categorized them all to the best of my ability, including standard genres (action, drama, comedy, sci-fi, etc.) and more esoteric categories that may be of interest to geeks (mad scientist, martial arts, robot, time-travel, etc.).
