Preface

The universe you know is but an infinitesimal fraction of all that exists. Even if your telescopes could reach it all, you would still only see what your human eyes can see and your human minds comprehend. There are aspects of this universe you cannot begin to understand, energies and forces, alternate dimensions, and parallel realities. And outside of this “multiverse,” there is an infinity of other, equally complex multiverses wholly incomprehensible to all of us. They appear and disappear, some lasting mere moments and some for periods that time cannot describe. And yet all of them exist in the blink of an eye to the one Almighty God, the Supreme Being who exists outside of time and space, and holds the key to all reality.

Yet though our entire universe is as nothing more than a tiny speck of dust floating through the infinite space of all creation, to the Almighty it is a cherished treasure to whom every tiny detail is known and nothing passes unobserved. I do not possess the Almighty’s omniscience, but I have seen more than most mortal men. I have read the Pnakotic Manuscripts, and traced the ancient symbols of the Darkhold. I have stood atop the holy summits of Har ha-Elohim and Ka-Katak-Tami. I have spoken to the Devourer of Worlds, to the Guardians of the Universe, and to the spirit of Nabu. I have broken bread with great men and women, and terrible ones, and I have seen just how little separated them.

In short, I have discovered wonders beyond imagining. As Socrates learned so long ago, though, I have finally come to realize, as my own life draws near its end: “He is wisest who knows that his wisdom is worth nothing.”

Therefore, what knowledge I have garnered, I share with you now – for what it is worth.

The Early Universe / First World

13,798,000,000 years ago

Our universe began nearly 14 billion years ago in an event usually (but not very accurately) called the “Big Bang.” To we mortals whose lives last but a few seasons, that may seem like an eternity, but from the universe’s own perspective, it was not that long ago. As a universe, we are still in the cries of our infancy, and there are yet a hundred trillion trillion trillion years to come before the matter that comprises this universe begins to decay, and then an even longer (by orders of magnitude) period until the universe has lost all energy and settled into the eternal slumber of “heat death.”

The Big Bang marked the beginning of the first major period of the universe, known as the Adventive Super-Eon. (It is also referred to as “The First World” by the residents of the pocket dimension known as Fourth World.)

At the precise moment of the Big Bang, the universe was so hot and energetic that no physical particles could exist, but as it expanded and cooled, the universe rapidly changed states, condensing from one status quo to another, leading finally to the separation of the strong force from the electroweak force and the creation of the first particles. In the literal blink of an eye, the universe had expanded to immense size and was filled with a hot, sub-atomic plasma made up of quarks and gluons. There was light during this time, but the universe was dense and opaque, so the light could not travel far. [science]

It is said that the spirit of the Supreme Being hovered over the new universe in these moments of its birth, and guided its development in profoundly subtle ways, each imperceptible nudge and whisper affecting the fates of countless souls as yet unborn.

Already present when the new universe was formed was the Living Tribunal, a near-omnipotent servant of the Supreme Being tasked with maintaining the Multiverse. Over the course of the next few tens of millions of years, other primal cosmic forces would coalesce into near-omniscient, metaphysical personifications, representing the abstract concepts of this universe. While they do not normally interfere in the affairs of mortals, these entities permeate our universe, binding it to reality and ensuring its continued existence.

13,797,930,000 years ago

Around 70,000 years after the Big Bang, atomic nuclei and cold dark matter began to dominate over radiation, paving the way for gravitational collapse. [science]

13,797,623,000 years ago

About 377,000 years after the Big Bang, a process known as “recombination” began: the universe finally cooled enough for hydrogen and helium nuclei to begin to capture electrons and form complete atoms. The density of the universe fell, and it quickly became transparent, so that light could shine unhindered. The Cosmic Microwave Background dates from this time. [science] “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” [Genesis 1:3]

13,780,000,000 years ago

By this time, the primal cosmic entity known as Eternity (Classical name: Chronos) had become fully aware. It sensed its diametrically opposing force, Abraxas (Classical name: Moros), “the end,” and sought a way to contain and control it. Discovering a single being, Galan, a lone survivor from a universe that had preceded our own, Eternity made him reborn in our universe to serve as an avatar for Abraxas. After gestating for billions of years, he would emerge as Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds, embodiment of the destructive cosmic force. Eternity and its siblings would call him brother.

13,770,000,000 years ago

By this time, the diametrically opposed cosmic entities known as Infinity and Oblivion had become fully aware.

13,760,000,000 years ago

By this time, the diametrically opposed cosmic entities known as Order and Chaos had become fully aware.

13,648,000,000 years ago

The “Dark Age” of the universe began around 150 million years after the Big Bang, so called because only the faintest hydrogen radiation would still be present from this time period.

13,248,000,000 years ago

The “Dark Age” of the universe ended as the first stars began to appear, comprised at first almost entirely of hydrogen and helium. (These oldest, “metal-free” stars are also known as “Population III” stars by astronomers.)

13,100,000,000 years ago

By this time, the universe’s first small galaxies had begun forming.

13,000,000,000 years ago

The universe took on its familiar appearance, as stars with small amounts of “metals” (other elements besides hydrogen and helium)—known as “Population II” stars by astronomers—and larger and more complex galaxies began to form, as well as quasars and black holes. Terrestrial planets and planetoids soon became commonplace, as did organic molecules, the basic building blocks of life.

At this time, a new family of cosmic entities began to become self-aware. Born from the life force and bound to the subconscious spirituality of mortals, they became known as The Endless. The first to become fully aware was Destiny.

12,750,000,000 years ago

By this time, the cosmic entity and member of The Endless known as Death had become self-aware. Death would become the most powerful of The Endless, often playing foil to Eternity in matters of cosmic importance.

12,500,000,000 years ago

By this time, the cosmic entity and member of The Endless known as Dream had become self-aware.

12,250,000,000 years ago

By this time, the cosmic entity and member of The Endless known as Destruction had become self-aware.

12,000,000,000 years ago

By this time, the cosmic entities and members of The Endless known as Desire and Despair had become self-aware.

11,750,000,000 years ago

By this time, the cosmic entity and member of The Endless known as Delight had become self-aware.

Life had existed in this universe from the first moments, but it took two billion years for the first native sentient life to appear.

Over the next several billion years, entire star systems and galaxies coalesced from the cosmic dusts, burned brightly, spawned great empires that rose and fell and were completely lost to history by the sands of time, and then even greater civilizations that reached out into the stars and explored and sought answers of their Maker, and ultimately returned to His bosom as cosmic dust once more, amidst stars that no longer shone brightly.

One such early civilization, now long lost, was where he first basic “human” form originated. The blueprint of this form would be carried forth and spread throughout the universe time and again by groups who believe it holds special significance. These “Preservers” would ensure that intelligent life on planets throughout the universe would evolve to follow the same basic humanoid pattern, with only slight variations.

The Reign of the Old Gods / Second World

10,000,000,000 years ago

When the universe was around 3.8 billion years old, Maltus, a planet of advanced science and technology, reached the pinnacle of civilization while most worlds were still mired in the first glimmers of self-awareness. The Maltusians explored not only the stars but their inner selves, developing telepathy and telekinesis to aid them in their quest for knowledge. Nothing was beneath the Maltusians’ interest, and nothing could remain a mystery for long. Theirs was a planet of harmony and it would remain so for billions of years as they conducted wide-ranging experiments to uncover the secrets of the universe. One of these experiments would eventually make the Maltusians immortal.

Meanwhile, cosmic entities Infinity and Oblivion, siblings who represent conflicting ideals, each decided to imbue a group of beings with immortality. Infinity chose for this experiment an advanced civilization near “The Sourceof the universe, on the planet Urgrund, which would later come to be known as GodWorld. Infinity felt compelled to elevate them to godhood, because according to one of its core ideals, “Anything which can be done, must be done.” The beings that dwelt there are now referred to as the Old Gods, and they were the first native, physical denizens of this universe to achieve great power and immortality. Upon this action, Death swore to its sibling Infinity that even these mighty gods would someday fall, for nothing born of this universe may escape Death.

Oblivion felt compelled to respond to its sibling’s action in its own way. Rather than choosing an advanced species, Oblivion gave godlike powers to a random assortment of extradimensional horrors, unnatural creatures that dwelt in the Outer Voids, on the periphery of the universe, where the normal laws of nature do not apply. At first, these beings were as unthinking as they were powerful, but over billions of years they achieved a consciousness of sorts and came to be known as the “Outer Gods,” representatives of the uncaring nothingness that Oblivion embodies.

Another pair of cosmic siblings, Order and Chaos, engaged in a similar experiment at this time, which created the Lords of Order (a species of energy beings from the planet Cilia) and the Lords of Chaos.

The ascension of the Old Gods marked the beginning of the second major time period in the universe, which they called “The Second World” and we now refer to as the Decusian Super-Eon. The first part of the Decusian Super-Eon is known as the Sublimic Eon.

9,900,000,000 years ago

Within 100 million years after their creation, the first two Outer Gods, Mlandoth and Mril-Thorion, had gained consciousness.

9,500,000,000 years ago

Mlandoth and Mril-Thorion joined together for the first time, creating Azathoth, who would come to be the most powerful of the Outer Gods.

9,000,000,000 years ago

Eventually, a billion years after their creation, the Outer Gods began to reach out to those dwelling in the universe, and would be worshipped by mortals, who would further spread Oblivion’s mission of nihilism. Eternity, however, vowed that the universe would be protected and would not succumb to Oblivion. To defend the universe, Eternity spawned a race of immortals of its own, sometimes referred to as the Proemial Gods. These beings became the caretakers, conceived through intent. They were formed without will and without awareness of anything but the purpose set before them. They existed to serve the universe. Among them were: Aegis Lady of All Sorrows (tasked with culling the living universe of divergences and aberrations), Antiphon the Monitor (tasked with monitoring the cosmic consonance), Brio of Life (tasked with the welfare of fledgling life forms), Diableri of Chaos (tasked with balancing order by maintaining entropy), and Tenebrous of the Darkness Between (tasked with the black, the living matter that binds the universe and makes it whole), among many others.

Many of the Proemial Gods recruited sentient species to help in their tasks. For example, Antiphon found common purpose with the Watchers, while Diableri was served by the Chaos Sprites. Another Proemial God, whose name and purpose remains hidden, was responsible for creating the Celestials, a race of giant humanoids that perform genetic experiments on mortals.

Also around this time, some nine billion years ago, a new galaxy formed. Although far, far away from the Milky Way, this Coruscant Galaxy would prove similarly influential. It was especially noteworthy for having an extremely high concentration of the cosmic life force. (Some have postulated this was due to the presence of high concentrations of a ubiquitous microbacterial life form known as midichlorians.) The various sentient species within the galaxy built their religion around this “Force,” and were able to harness it to rapidly build a great galactic civilization. [Note that despite some shaky Jedi science to the contrary, the presence of midichlorians in one's blood absolutely does not have any effect on one's ability to utilize the Force. Instead, midichlorians are merely one component in the tapestry of life that is the Force.]

8,800,000,000 years ago

The Milky Way galaxy formed. It would prove to be one of the most important galaxies in the universe, thanks in large part to an unassuming yet extraordinary planet called Earth. Most of the history I share with you herein will concern Earth and its secrets.

8,100,000,000 years ago

Eternity created an additional being called Eon to help defend the universe. Less powerful than the Proemial Gods but closer to Eternity’s true purpose, Eon was tasked with defending the universe from end and monitoring beings of incredible power who might threaten the universe’s continued existence.

8,075,000,000 years ago

The Maltusians began experimenting extensively on other species throughout the Universe. One of these experiments led to the creation of a new species, the Psions.

This is the approximate start of the second phase of the Decusian Super-Eon, which is known as the Empiric Eon.

8,000,000,000 years ago

Elsewhere in the universe, the species that would eventually become known as the Watchers evolved along a similar path to the Maltusians, developing extraordinary intellectual abilities. They debated whether or not to share their vast knowledge with others, but when they did so, those they bestowed knowledge to used that knowledge to create weapons of war and ended up annihilating themselves. The Watchers thereafter decided never to interfere with the affairs of others again, and dedicated themselves to the task of observing and recording the universe only.

7,000,000,000 years ago

A Yekubian cube landed on a planet near the Milky Way Galaxy’s rim.

Around this time, the Watchers became the servants of Antiphon the Monitor and left their home planet forever, scattering throughout the universe to fulfill their destiny as ever-vigilant observers.

6,200,000,000 years ago

Out of all the experiments the Maltusians had conducted, the one thing they had forbidden of themselves was tampering with the fabric of space-time, but one of their kind, named Krona, broke this taboo. Obsessed with the secrets of creation, he used “time bending” technology in an effort to witness the birth of the Universe. However, the experiment failed. Rather than bending, the space-time continuum split, creating multiple, parallel universes. Most of these were exact duplicates of our own universe in every way, but quantum uncertainties would cause them to come to exhibit tiny differences that would grow larger over time. (Examples of such universes include the ones we now know as Earth-D, Earth-M, Earth-O and many more.) Krona was subsequently banished from Maltus by his own people.

At the moment of this splintering, a new cosmic entity was born known as the Monitor. As the living embodiment of the Multiverse, the Monitor became a silent caretaker to all of the parallel universes that had been created. However, one of the parallel universes was not a duplicate of our own, but rather a negative-image Antimatter Universe. (Also sometimes referred to as the Qward Universe or Earth-Q, after the planet Qward, which is that universe’s version of our planet Oa.) The Antimatter Universe became a source of great evil known as the Anti-Monitor, which threatened to destroy the Multiverse. One by one, it began locating and destroying each of the myriad positive matter universes in turn.

Perhaps not coincidentally, it was at this time that Galactus awoke from his slumber with an all-consuming hunger. The Watcher known as Ecce had been observing Galactus as he slumbered in his spaceship from another universe, and he had learned the nature of the being within. Knowing that Galactus would need to consume entire, inhabited planets to survive, Ecce considered interfering, but decided to abide by the tenants of his species and merely observe. When Galactus awoke, he devoured the planet Archeopia. It would be the first of many.

This calamity marked the start of the third and final phase of the Decusian Super-Eon, the Pericular Eon.

6,000,000,000 years ago

The Monitor and Anti-Monitor became aware of each other’s presence. They began a battle across the dimensional barriers of the Multiverse that lasted a million years. Many universes perished during this time, although our own universe was not part of the battlefield. At the end of the war, both the Monitor and Anti-Monitor were rendered unconscious in a sleep that would last billions of years.

5,500,000,000 years ago

With the environment of their home planet Maltus having grown unfavorable, and sensing that they would need to dedicate themselves to combating the growing evil unleashed by Krona’s failed experiment, the Maltusians relocated to the young, isolated planet Oa in the Boötes Void. They left Maltus to the reptilian Psions, a lesser humanoid species that they had previously helped evolve to the point of sentience.

By this time, the Elders of the Universe had all achieved great power and immortality. These were highly advanced beings, the last members of great civilizations that had existed in the early days of the Universe. Known by such names as the Collector, the Grandmaster, the Champion of the Universe, Ego the Living Planet, and many others, they too left their original, dying home worlds and set out for greater purposes in the larger universe.

5,150,000,000 years ago

When the Maltusians relocated from the planet Maltus to Oa, they had left behind the reptilian Psions. In the millennia that followed, the Psions studied the teachings and technology abandoned by their creators and advanced their own intelligence greatly. They then travelled to Oa themselves. Surprised, the Oans offered the Psions a young, remote star system of their own in a galaxy on the border of the explored universe. There, the Psions were given absolute sway to continue their own experiments and do as they pleased.

The Age of Chaos / Innovial Eon

5,000,000,000 years ago

After reigning over the universe for five billion years, the reign of the Old Gods finally came to an end: “There came a time when the Old Gods died! The brave died with the cunning! The noble perished, locked in battle with unleashed evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!” [New Gods #1]

Already weakened by a Civil War amongst themselves, they were then attacked by a powerful being from the Anti-Matter Universe known as Imperiex. They managed to defeat it by unleashing something called the “Anti-Life Equation,” but neither they nor their home planet GodWorld survived. The energy unleashed by the destruction of GodWorld spread outward across the universe, generating what would later become known as the “Godwave.” This cosmic shockwave moved faster than the speed of light to the edge of the universe and then back to the Source, seeding the entire universe with the potential to eventually bring forth beings with extraordinary abilities.

GodWorld and all of the galaxies within a billion light years radius of it were swept into an alternate dimension, which we now know as the Fourth World. Where they used to exist, there is now a mind-bogglingly large supervoid, a completely empty region of space that scientists have named the “Cosmic Microwave Background Cold Spot.”

The death of the Old Gods marked the beginning of the third major time period of the universe, known as the Precambrian Super-Eon. (To those who would later come to occupy the Fourth World, this time period was known as “The Third World.”) The first part of the Precambrian was the Innovial Eon, and the first part of that was the Chaotian Era.

The Old Gods had served a vital role in the power balance of the universe. Having lost that, the being known as Eon sought a new champion to maintain that balance and defend the universe, and settled on the humanoid alien known as Glakandar. After creating special “Quantum Bands” of great power, Eon appointed Glakandar the first “Protector of the Universe,” a title still held today by his successors.

Meanwhile, the Oans (formerly Maltusians) renamed themselves the “Guardians of the Universe” and swore to avenge the death of the Old Gods and the crime of their brother Krona by dedicating the rest of their immortal lives to policing evil throughout the Universe. In addition to actively patrolling the Universe themselves, they began physically evolving themselves to better study and develop a long-term solution to the problem.

4,800,000,000 years ago

After two hundred thousand years, the smoldering fragments of GodWorld and the billions of other galaxies that had been swept along with it into the alternate dimension of Fourth World coalesced into a new galaxy. Because the laws of nature were different in this alternate dimension, the billions of galaxies that had existed became just one galaxy, the Promethean Galaxy, in the Fourth World. The pieces of GodWorld itself became two massive planets, known today as New Genesis and Apokalips. Billions of years later, these worlds would again yield advanced, godlike civilizations. And as they discovered the legacy of those who came before them, they would claim that heritage and call themselves “New Gods.”

4,619,000,000 years ago

After more than four billion years, the star system of Vanss, one of the earliest to form in the Milky Way galaxy, had nearly reached the end of its life cycle. The massive star itself was almost exhausted and seemed in danger of burning out at any time, often flickering as if about to go out, before shining again. Many of its planets and moons had already been lost, but one inhabited, Earth-like planet remained. A cold and barren place, most of its civilizations had collapsed, and predatory monsters roamed free. Technology had been forgotten, and magic had reasserted itself as the dominant force for those few who survived. [The Dying Earth series by Jack Vance, here interpreted as another star system instead of Earth itself.]

4,618,000,000 years ago

Having finally reached the end of its life, the massive star once known as Vanss exploded in what is known as the “primal supernova,” creating a nebula that would later become the Solar System.

4,568,000,000 years ago

The pre-stellar nebula formed by the primal supernova began to collapse into our Solar System: the star that would become our Sun and the protoplanetary disc that would become its surrounding planets.

4,567,000,000 years ago

Within a million years of the birth of the Solar System, gas and dust in the protoplanetary disc had coalesced into the first generation of planets. At this point, there were five outer, gas giant planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and one that has since escaped the Solar System, which is often called “Liber.” There were also several terrestrial planets, mostly large “Super-Earths” in tight orbits around the Sun, and hundreds of other small, terrestrial protoplanets still in the process of formation within the protoplanetary disc. At this time, Jupiter started migrating inwards, disrupting the inner Solar System and causing the larger terrestrial planets to fall into the Sun.

4,562,500,000 years ago

Around this time, Jupiter had reached approximately the orbit that Mars currently holds, and had caused most of the mass of the inner Solar System to fall into the Sun. Now, because of an orbital resonance with Saturn, it began moving away from the Sun once again.

4,558,000,000 years ago

About 10 million years of the birth of the Solar System, gas in the protoplanetary disc had been blown away, Jupiter had settled into its current orbit, and formation of the outer planets was complete. In the inner Solar System, there were 50-100 terrestrial protoplanets remaining, ranging in size from the Moon to Mars. All of them were still undergoing formation and experiencing collisions, and none were yet in their final orbits.

This was the beginning of what is known as the Hadean Era, the very early stages of development on Earth, Mars and Venus. These planets would soon see their first solid surfaces and liquid water, but no signs yet of indigenous life.

4,533,000,000 years ago

The Mars-sized protoplanet “Theia” had shared Earth’s orbit for some time, but such an arrangement was not stable over the long-term, and it finally ended with the two planets colliding. The still-forming Earth absorbed Theia, and the ejected debris solidified into Earth’s Moon.

4,529,000,000 years ago

Ever since the formation of Earth’s Moon, the strong tidal forces between it and the Earth had been slowing the Moon’s rotation. By this point, it had become completely synchronized with its orbital period, so that the same side always faced Earth.

4,518,000,000 years ago

About 50 million years after its formation, the Sun became a main sequence star, meaning that the nuclear fusion of hydrogen had become its dominant means of producing energy.

4,500,000,000 years ago

Around this time, the “Great Old One” known as Cthugha arrived on Earth, along with his fire vampires. They were the first living beings to inhabit the planet, but the planet was very inhospitable to life as we know it, and they were very different than the life forms we know. (The Great Old Ones are a group of loosely related, very powerful extraterrestrials who ruled Earth in ancient times and are now imprisoned – here and elsewhere – in a state of deathlike sleep. Many are descended from the Outer Gods, and are still worshipped to this day by secret cults of deranged followers who await their return “when the stars are right.”)

At this time, Earth had a heavy carbon dioxide atmosphere mixed with hydrogen and water vapor, and a molten surface with an average temperature in excess of 230°C (446°F). It rotated very quickly on its axis, completing a day-night cycle in only six hours instead of 24. Earth’s moon, which also had a hot, molten surface, was only about 1/16th its current distance, appearing 16 times wider across the sky than it does today.

4,468,000,000 years ago

Within 100 million years of the birth of the Solar System, terrestrial planet formation was complete. There were five terrestrial planets at this point: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, and a fifth planet between Mars and the Main Asteroid Belt, variously called “Planet V” or “Yuggoth.” The Main Asteroid Belt also contained many smaller protoplanets that were unable to coalesce fully into planets, as did the Kuiper Belt which lay just beyond the gas giants. Both of these belts of debris were much more densely populated than they are today.

4,400,000,000 years ago

Despite the hot temperatures, liquid water was able to exist on Earth at this time due to the intense atmospheric pressure. The oldest known rocks still in existence on Earth were formed at this time.

4,300,000,000 years ago

Within the alternate dimension of Fourth World, intelligent life began to develop again and evolve at a phenomenal speed.

4,200,000,000 years ago

Oceans began forming on Earth.

4,100,000,000 years ago

Resonance in Jupiter and Saturn’s orbits moved Neptune out into the Kuiper Belt, causing the Late Heavy Bombardment to begin. This was the peak rate of impact events from comets and asteroids on the planets of the inner Solar System.

The surface of the Earth cooled enough for the crust to begin to solidify.

The Noachian Period began on Mars. The oldest surfaces date back to this time, and there was extensive erosion by liquid water producing river valley networks. Large lakes and oceans were also present.

The Age of Bacteria / Archaean Eon

4,000,000,000 years ago

The Archaean Eon began on Earth as the planet began to transition from the hotter, more chaotic environment of the Hadean Era to a cooler, more stable environment. The first cratons (primitive continents) appeared. At this time, Earth’s surface was broken up into many small plates with volcanic islands and arcs in great abundance. Cratons formed as crustal rock was melted and remelted by hot spots and recycled in subduction zones. The cratons were prevented from coalescing into larger units by the high rate of geologic activity. Earth rotated on its axis about once every eight hours at this point.

“Yuggoth,” the fifth terrestrial planet that once existed  between Mars and the Main Asteroid Belt, was perturbed by gravitational interactions with the other inner planets and Jupiter. It was tossed onto a highly eccentric orbit, spinning through the inner belt of asteroids, causing them to fly into Mars-crossing orbits. This temporarily enhanced the population of bodies on Earth-crossing orbits, and also increased the lunar impact rate. One of these asteroids also caused the Borealis Basin impact event on Mars.

3,900,000,000 years ago

By this time, the planet Yuggoth had moved into an extremely distant trans-Neptunian orbit perpendicular to the ecliptic of the Solar System. Even today, this odd, distant placement, combined with its dark color, make it nearly impossible to locate by telescope from Earth.

After a close encounter with Jupiter, the gas giant planet “Liber” was flung from the Solar System. Jupiter lost angular momentum, causing it to recede from the Sun’s vicinity, ensuring the stability and survival of the inner planets. Liber caused turbulence within the Kuiper Belt and Oort cloud en route out of the Solar System, further contributing to the Late Heavy Bombardment.

3,800,000,000 years ago

By this time, the Oort Cloud surrounding the Solar System had reached its maximum mass, and the Late Heavy Bombardment period had come to an end.

The first life appeared on Earth in the form of simple, single-cell organisms such as bacteria, carried to Earth from organic materials in outer space.

With this first spark of life, Yidhra, “The Dream Witch,” suddenly appeared on Earth. Having been conceived but not born at the same time as the Outer Gods, Yidhra’s life force had lain waiting for eons. Now she grew rapidly, evolving from the basic building block of life on Earth, into complex life forms and finally into a goddess.

Earth’s cratons begin to stabilize into larger land masses and finally true continents.

3,700,000,000 years ago

The Hesperin Period began on Mars as that planet saw its own first signs of simple, single-cell organisms. This was also a time of extensive lava plains on the surface of Mars. Olympus Mons, the tallest mountain in the Solar System, also began forming during this period, and water flowed freely.

3,500,000,000 years ago

Bacteria on Earth developed a primitive form of photosynthesis, although it did not yet produce oxygen as a byproduct.

The Great Old One known as Tsathoggua arrived on Earth and settled in the dark gulf of N’kai, deep beneath what is now the Great Plains of North America.

Earth rotated on its axis about once every 10 hours at this point.

The Guardians of the Universe divided the Universe into 3,600 sectors and created an all-robot force to police it. (The Milky Way fell into Space Sector 2814, while the neighboring Andromeda galaxy fell into Sector 2813.) The robot force was originally called the “Peacekeepers,” but as they became known for aggressively pursuing wrong-doers, they were soon nicknamed the “Manhunters.”

3,100,000,000 years ago

Corrupted by the renegade known as Krona, the Guardians’ robot police force, now officially calling themselves the Manhunters, determined that in order to keep the peace they must eradicate all life from the Universe. Congregating in Space Sector 666, they managed to kill all but five sentient life forms in that entire sector between Oa and the explored edge of the universe. Trillions of systems were “cleansed” of intelligent life before the Guardians discovered the treason and intervened. They would spend millions of years capturing all of the Manhunters and then millions more debating what to do about them,.

On Earth, the first continent formed, known today as supercontinent Vaalbara. Even though Vaalbara was relatively small itself, all other land was in the form of small granite islands and land-masses much too small to be considered continents. Therefore it is considered a supercontinent, because for at least part of its existence, it was the only continent on Earth.

3,050,000,000 years ago

Having captured all of the renegade Manhunters, the Guardians of the Universe relocated them to an uncharted area of space incapable of sustaining organic life. They banished the Manhunters to this region, designating it “Space Sector 3601,” and by treaty ruling it off-limits to the Guardians or their representatives. Some of the Guardians were unhappy with these terms, however. While they agreed to abide by the treaty, they did not trust the Manhunters. Leaving Oa behind, they ventured to the border of Sector 3601 near the edge of the explored universe and established a new home, where they could stand vigilant. (Note that at this time, the Milky Way galaxy and its neighbors, for example, were beyond where the Guardians’ had thus far explored.) Calling themselves “Controllers” instead of Guardians, this group would in time begin to diverge from their Oan cousins.

3,000,000,000 years ago

The Guardians of the Universe rebuilt their intergalactic police force, this time using living beings with free will to reduce the possibility of mass corruption. They named the new police force the Green Lanterns Corps.

A Yekubian cube landed on a planet near the center of the Milky Way Galaxy.

On Earth, the first bacteria evolved at this time that produced oxygen as a byproduct during photosynthesis, but this oxygen was quickly absorbed and there was no oxygen in the atmosphere.

Also on Earth, the supercontinent of Ur formed. It was smaller than Australia is now, but was the largest land mass Earth had yet produced.

Earth rotated on its axis about once every 12 hours at this point—twice as rapidly as it currently does—making the year about 730 “days” long.

On Mars, the Amazonian Period began. The planet was less geologically active and less prone to impact basins, but lava flows, glacial activity and the flow of liquid water continued during this period. In the Early Amazonian Epoch, photosynthesis first began producing oxygen as a byproduct, just as on Earth.

The Oxygenation Age / Early Proterozoic Eon

2,450,000,000 years ago

The Proterozoic Eon began on Earth, which would see the first simple multi-cellular life, and the atmosphere becoming oxygenic thanks to the side-effects of photosynthesis.

The production of oxygen during photosynthesis began to have a noticeable effect on the Earth. It did not immediately accumulate in Earth's atmosphere, as it was absorbed into oceans and seabed rock. However, it did , but it did begin to have an immediate effect on the planet's climate, as oxygen reacted with atmospheric methane, a greenhouse gas, causing the planet to begin to cool. This “Great Oxygenation Event” (also known as the “Oxygen Catastrophe”) would directly lead to the Earth's first Ice Age.

2,400,000,000 years ago

The Huronian Ice Age began on Earth.

2,290,000,000 years ago

In the Coruscant Galaxy, the Columi (from planet Columus) first achieved interstellar travel. It was right around this time that the Wookiees first begin to evolve on planet Kashyyyk in that galaxy.

2,100,000,000 years ago

By this time, the Kenorland supercontinent had finished splitting apart and the Huronian Ice Age came to an end after 300 million years.

1,900,000,000 years ago

The Columbia supercontinent (also known as Nuna or Hudsonland) formed on Earth. Columbia contained almost all of Earth’s continental blocks and is estimated to have been about 12,900 kilometers north to south, and about 4,800 km across at its broadest part. The east coast of India was attached to western North America, with southern Australia against western Canada. Most of South America spun so that the western edge of modern-day Brazil lined up with eastern North America, forming a continental margin that extended into the southern edge of Scandinavia.

1,850,000,000 years ago

The ocean now saturated, oxygen began to gas out into the atmosphere. However, oxygen levels remained trace, as the gas was absorbed by land surfaces.

The Elder Age / Neoproterozoic Era

1,100,000,000 years ago

The Rodinia supercontinent formed on Earth.

The Elder Things arrived on Earth and became the first extraterrestrial species to colonize the planet. Exhibiting both animal and vegetable characteristics, they stood roughly eight feet tall and had the appearance of a huge, oval-shaped barrel with starfish-like appendages at both ends. The top appendage was a head adorned with five eyes, five eating tubes, and a set of cilia for “seeing” without light. The bottom appendage was five-limbed and was used for walking and other forms of locomotion. They also had five leathery, fan-like retractable wings and five sets of branching tentacles that sprouted from their torsos. Both their tentacles and the slits housing their folded wings were spaced at regular intervals about their bodies. They landed in the Antarctic Ocean and founded their first city there.

To act as servitors and food, the Elder Things created the Shoggoths, massive amoeba-like, protoplasmic creatures that look like they are made out of tar, with multiple eyes “floating” on the surface.

1,000,000,000 years ago

Native multicellular life first appeared on Earth.

Earth rotated on its axis about once every 20 hours at this point, making the year about 435 “days” long.

900,000,000 years ago

By this time, Elder Thing cities had spread across the oceans of Earth.

850,000,000 years ago

By this time, all of the oxygen sinks on land had filled, and the gas began to accumulate in the atmosphere.

800,000,000 years ago

The Elder Things had adapted to land, but many remained in the oceans.

The Cryogenian Ice Age began on Earth, a very cold period that would eventually create a “Snowball Earth” environment.

750,000,000 years ago

The Flying Polyps arrived on Earth, the second extraterrestrial species to colonize the planet. They built basalt cities with high windowless towers on the land. They possessed polypus, semi-material alien bodies that could fly despite the absence of wings, and could turn invisible.

The Rodinia supercontinent split apart.

Earth rotated on its axis about once every 21 hours at this point, making the year about 420 “days” long.

720,000,000 years ago

The Sturtian glaciation, the longest period of glaciation during the Cryogenian Ice Age, began. Over the next 60 million years, the Earth would experience a “Snowball Earth” environment where glaciers reached the equator.

716,000,000 years ago

The Proemial God named Brio visited Earth and created the Demiurge (also known as “Phanes” or “Protogonos” in Orphic tradition, or as “Chaos” in Hesiod’s Theogony), the sentient embodiment of Earth’s natural biosphere, in order to oversee and protect life on Earth during the perilous conditions of the Cryogenian Ice Age.

700,000,000 years ago

Driven from their homes by the advancing glaciers, the Flying Polyps tried to expand into the oceans, sparking a bitter war with the Elder Things. Eventually, the Elder Things were victorious.

660,000,000 years ago

The Sturtian glaciation ended after 60 million years, and the Earth entered a cold interglacial period.

650,000,000 years ago

A new period of severe glaciation, the Marinoan, began, creating another “Snowball Earth” environment for 15 million years.

635,000,000 years ago

The Cryogenian Ice Age ended with the “Marinoan meltdown,” warming the Earth to extreme greenhouse conditions.

600,000,000 years ago

The Pannotia (partial) supercontinent (also known as Vendian) formed on Earth.

The first simple marine animals appeared around this time.

Atmospheric oxygen reached about one-fifth its current level (4-5% as opposed to 21% today).

590,000,000 years ago

Having saved the Earth from the Ice Age, and guided the evolution of the first simple animals, the Demiurge sensed the need for diversity in the next phase of Earth’s history. It took its consciousness and split it into multiple fragments, which became the first generation of Elder Gods. Among them were Abzu (a.k.a. Hydros), Belathauzer, Chthon, Erebus, Gaea (a.k.a. Jord or Tellus), Hyppus, Isuus, Nyx, Oshtur, Physis, Set (a.k.a. Ophion or Yig), Tartarus, Thesis, the “Wild One,” and a group known collectively as the Gibborim. Each of the Elder Gods adopted a role in helping the Demiurge to further develop and protect Earth’s biosphere.

In time, some of the Elder Gods also had offspring of their own, so that there were multiple generations, albeit separated by millions of years. For example, Erebus and Nyx gave birth to Aether and Hemera, and Aether and Hemera in turn gave birth to a third-generation Elder Goddess named Tiamat (a.k.a. Thalassa). Tiamat and Abzu then gave birth to a fourth generation of Elder Gods, including Bashmu the Venemous Snake, Girtablullu the Great Scorpion, Kingu, Kulullu the Fish-Man, Kusarikku the Bull-Man, Lakhamu, Lahmu the Hairy One, Mushkhushu the Furious Snake, Oorn, Ugallu the Weather Beast, Umu Dabrutu the Violent Storm, Ungoliant the Great Spider (a.k.a. Omm the Unspeakable or Zath), Uridimmu the Mad Lion, and Ushumgallu the Great Dragon.

The Diversification Age / Paleozoic Sub-Era

541,000,000 years ago

The Precambrian Super-Eon ended, and the current (“Progressive”) Super-Eon began. The first (and thus far only) part of the Progressive Super-Eon has been contemporaneous with the Contemporary Eon and the Phanerozoic Era. The first part of the Phanerozoic Era was known as the Cambrian Period. [Note that this does not sync with current archaeological definitions, but it keeps the lengths of Eons and Eras consistent throughout history.]

The Great Race of Yith, fleeing catastrophe on their homeworld, transmitted their minds into a race of cone-shaped creatures on Earth. They drove the Flying Polyps underground and imprisoned them there. Following that war, they built their first and greatest city, Pnakotus, in modern-day Australia.

Insects and seeds both first appeared on Earth.

As the star system that they called home was dying, the Psions relocated to a new young star system. They chose the Vega system of the Milky Way, a galaxy far afield of their former masters the Guardians of the Universe. As before, their agreement with the Guardians gave them absolute sway to continue their own experiments and do as they pleased within this star system. Over time, they would use astroengineering to create a system with 22 terrestrial worlds in the star’s habitable zone.

350,000,000 years ago

A cataclysm raised numerous new land masses, such as Ponape and R’lyeh. The disaster also destroyed several marine Elder Thing cities.

The Great Old One Cthulhu and his kin arrived from the star Xoth, and settled on the newly-risen landmasses. The Elder Things warred with Cthulhu, but they eventually made peace. Cthulhu was permitted to keep his surface territories, and the Elder Things kept the rest of the planet. The Deep Ones entered the service of Cthulhu, and helped build the city of R’lyeh.

The foundation of the underground civilization of K’n-yan (in what is now North America) also dates to this time.

The massive growth of trees all across the landscape over the next 60 million years pumped oxygen into the atmosphere, while sequestering carbon at an astounding rate. The result was a thick, dense atmosphere with roughly 35 percent oxygen—nearly 65 percent more than today. This made fire a continuous threat and also allowed insect life to grow to giant proportions.

300,000,000 years ago

The Pangea supercontinent formed on Earth.

Reptiles appeared on Earth. (The Elder God Set was involved in their creation.)

Ever since their creation, the Elder Gods had been wary of the Great Old Ones, seeing them as a growing threat to the Earth’s biosphere. Around this time, the tension finally boiled over into open warfare.

On Mars, the Late Amazonian Epoch began as the first Martian bipedal “primate” species appeared. Having apparently evolved separately, these were the primitive ancestors of both the six-armed Green Martians, and the more familiar four-armed “human” varieties.

275,000,000 years ago

The Serpent People arose, having evolved from primitive reptiles under Set, and founded the First Kingdom of Valusia in the part of Pangaea that would become North America.

By this time, many of the Elder Gods were becoming noticeably changed by their war against the Great Old Ones. Once mere peaceful nurturers of the biosphere, they were now turning ruthless and abandoning their old priorities to feed their lust for war. Meanwhile, the Elder God Chthon had begun devoting himself to the study and manipulation of mystical energies, becoming Earth’s first master of black magic.

260,000,000 years ago

The Karoo Ice Age ended.

The Age of Reptiles / Mesozoic Sub-Era

252,280,000 years ago

The war between the Great Old Ones and the Elder Gods ended in a cataclysm, also known as the “Permian-Triassic Extinction Event,” which eliminated 90-95% of marine species and 70% of land species on Earth. R’lyeh sank beneath the waves, with Cthulhu imprisoned within the city. Many of the other Great Old Ones were also imprisoned.

This marked the end of the Permain Period and the beginning of the Triassic Period.

250,000,000 years ago

On the post-cataclysmic Earth, with barely any life remaining on the planet and already distanced from their original peaceful purpose by 50 million years of war, many of the Elder Gods began to go mad. Some, such as the Gibborim, simply withdrew from the world and entered a deep, death-like sleep in lairs deep underground. Others were corrupted and turned demonic. Chief among the latter was Set, who realized that by killing his fellow Elder Gods, he could gain their energies and make himself more powerful. Over the next hundred million years, most of the Elder Gods became corrupted and warred with each other. Only Oshtur, who left the planet, and Gaea, who had kept true to her original purpose, were able to resist turning demonic with their siblings.

The Shoggoths rebelled against the Elder Things, but were defeated.

Earth rotated on its axis about once every 23 hours at this point, making the year about 380 “days” long.

245,000,000 years ago

Atlach-Nacha ruled its arachnid Children.

225,000,000 years ago

Serpent People civilization and their Kingdom of Valusia collapsed, destroyed by the rise of the dinosaurs. Those that survived went into hiding, mostly driven underground.

Around this time, the alien Nuwali were building wildlife preserves on many planets for the Beyonders. One of the preserves was built in the part of Pangaea that would become Antarctica, in a valley shielded by advanced technology. For many millennia, the Nuwali kept this preserve stocked with animal life and well maintained even after those species went extinct elsewhere on the planet. The remnants of the preserve would survive into modern times as the “Savage Lands.”

221,400,000 years ago

Life on land had finally fully recovered, 30 million years after the Permian-Triassic Extinction Event. (Marine life had recovered quicker.)

220,000,000 years ago

By this point, the first civilizations had arisen on Mars, founded by the Black Martians, or “First Born.” This species would soon become the dominant sentient species on the planet, although pockets of other species, such as the Green Martians and “Kangaroo Men,” would remain until modern times. The Black Martians would later diversify into a wide range of sub-species, including the well-known Red Martians.

The Mi-go set up a mining operation on Earth. The Elder Things tried to battle them in space, but found they have devolved so much that they could no longer do so. The Mi-go eventually controlled much of the northern portion of Earth. Some Mi-go settled in Mu and began worshipping Ghatanothoa.

150,000,000 years ago

By this time, Gaea was the only first-generation Elder God left on Earth who had not turned demonic. She called out to her father, the Demiurge, as she had done many times before, and her pleas were finally answered. The Demiurge, which had dissipated but not entirely disappeared when he created the Elder Gods, reformed himself and appeared to his daughter, and together they created a son for Gaea, whom they named Atum.

The Age of Mammals / Early Cenozoic Sub-Era

66,036,000 years ago

After millions of years, the war between Atum and the renegade Elder Gods had ripped the Earth’s crust apart, causing volcanic activity that choked the atmosphere and disrupted the global environment. Now the final moments of that war had finally arrived. After many narrow escapes, Set (the last demonic Elder God on Earth) finally met Atum (in his Demogorge form) in battle. During the battle, Set summoned a colossal asteroid from space to try to destroy both the Demogorge and all life on the planet. The asteroid strike created the Chicxulub crater in what is now the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico, and was responsible for a global extinction-level event, but Set lost the battle and was forced to transport himself to another dimension. The battle left him unable to transport himself back to Earth again.

Atum survived and afterward released the energies he had absorbed from all of the Elder Gods, returned to his normal form. He then withdrew to live on the Sun. Over time, the Demiurge reabsorbed those energies, which had originally come from him, and grew more and more powerful.

The Flying Polyps escaped the global cataclysm while taking revenge on the Great Race of Yith, which sent its greatest minds to bodies on the planet Jupiter. From Jupiter, the Yithians proceeded to bodies similar to their Earthly ones on a world orbiting a dark star near Taurus. Many Elder Thing cities were also destroyed, including their original settlement in Antarctica. To replace it, a new Antarctic city was constructed.

This marked the end of the Cretaceous Period and the beginning of the Paleogene Period.

66,000,000 years ago

Following the cataclysm, non-avian dinosaurs quickly became extinct throughout most of Earth. However, pockets of them still survived here and there in “lost world” enclaves.

40,000,000 years ago

The First Host of the Celestials arrived around this time on the planet Skrullos, homeworld of the Skrulls in the Drox star system of the Andromeda Galaxy. The Celestials were extremely powerful extraterrestrials who appeared as 2,000-foot (610-meter) tall armored humanoids. The First Host conducted genetic experiments on the primitive, reptilian inhabitants, which created two new subspecies of Skrulls: the “Deviant” variant, which gained the ability to shapeshift, and the “Eternal” variant, which was given the gift of near-immortality. As they did on so many other planets, the Celestials would appear three more times, with increasing frequency, over the next 333,396 Earth years to monitor the progress of the three branches of Skrulls.

39,700,000 years ago

Around this time, the Celestials returned for the final time to the planet Skrullos, to conduct the Fourth Host and pass judgment on the Skrulls. By this time, the “Deviant” Skrulls had risen and destroyed the other two subspecies. The Celestials found their creation worthy.

39,000,000 years ago

By this time, the Skrulls had developed spacefaring capabilities and had begun to build an interplanetary empire within the Andromeda Galaxy.

35,000,000 years ago

After millennia of looking for the means to convert thought into reality, Skrull scientists finally discovered the means to do so, creating the Cosmic Cube. The Cosmic Cube was claimed by the Skrull emperor, who used its power to proclaim himself a god. But the Cube soon began to act independently, and ended up destroying two-thirds of the Skrull empire. The Cube was lost to the Skrulls, who then began rebuilding their shattered empire.

23,030,000 years ago

This marked the end of the Paleogene Period and the beginning of the Neogene Period, which we are still in. The first part of the Neogene Period was called the Miocene Epoch.

20,000,000 years ago

An “Elder Race” of humanoids settled the land of Theem’hdra on Earth. The civilization soon died out, overrun by the demon-like N’Garai, which they had accidentally summoned from the realm of the Elder God known as Chthon. Teh Atht, a wizard of the time, left behind a manuscript later known as Legends of the Olden Runes. The N’Garai would conquer and rule over large sections of the planet for the next several million years.

13,000,000 years ago

After having witnessed the folly and destruction of his first children, the Elder Gods, the Demiurge had reabsorbed their energies and used them to help the Earth’s biosphere slowly recover. At this point, the Demiurge withdrew from the Earthly plane to a pocket dimension (often called the “Timeless Halls”) to contemplate the future. The sole remaining Elder Goddess on Earth, Gaea, assumed the Demiurge’s previous role as protector of Earth’s biosphere.

The last common ancestor of all apes (including humans) lived at this time.

Hominids separated from other primates on Earth.

In the star system of Gamma Microscopii, the advanced robotic life forms on the small, outer planet of Cybertron developed complex emotions and rebelled against their Quintesson masters. They would soon gain their independence, banishing organic life from Cybertron.

The Serpent People subterranean city of Yoth (under what is now Oklahoma) flourished at this time under the guidance of their god Set (whom they called Yig). Their science had progressed to the point that they had created servant species, such as the Gyaa-yothn and Voormis.

The Deep One city of Yatta-uc, beneath modern Lake Titicaca, was in its heyday at this time.

The Hyperborean Age

4,500,000 years ago

The Serpent People’s underground city of Yoth was destroyed by Set when many of the Serpent People turned to the worship of Tsathoggua, who dwelled in the nearby underground realm of N’kai. A few Set-worshipping survivors founded a new civilization in Hyperborea (modern-day Greenland). Tsathoggua journeyed to Hyperborea at some point following these events.

By this point, Earth’s rotation had slowed to the point where days were only about one minute shorter than they are today, and the solar year was only about a quarter day longer (approximately 365½ days).

4,000,000 years ago

Aliens left a rectangular black monolith in northeastern Africa. The first bipedal human ancestors appeared suddenly in the vicinity of this monolith.

Within the Timeless Halls, the Demiurge had reinvented itself as a powerful creator deity and would soon go by the name Eru Ilúvatar. He began creating a new group of powerful beings to assist him, the Ainur. The first fifteen Ainur created were extremely powerful and were known originally as the Valar, and later as the Vanir or Middle Gods. They were Melkor the first and his brother Manwë of the winds; Varda of the stars; Ulmo of the waters; Aulë the maker; Yavanna the giver of fruits and her sister Vána the ever-young; Oromë the huntsman and his sister Nessa the dancer; brothers Námo and Irmo, the masters of spirits, and their sister Nienna the merciful; Etsë the gentle; Vairë the weaver; and Tulkas the strong. After the Valar, Eru Ilúvatar created many lesser spirits, the servants and helpers of the Valar, known collectively as the Maiar, who have often been compared to angels.

The star Gamma Microscopii, a G7 giant 2.5 times the mass of our Sun, passed within about 1.5 light years of the center of our Solar System, creating perturbations in the Oort Cloud. The close encounter did not affect the planets of the Solar System, but chance gravitational interactions caused the small planet Cybertron to become dislodged from is orbit around Gamma Microscopii. It was ejected from its star system and put on a trajectory towards the Solar System. The techno-organic life forms on the planet proved highly adaptable, however, and managed to survive despite losing their sun.

Seven hundred years later, as it became apparent that their planet was on a comet-like trajectory to crash into our Sun, a war broke out between two factions on Cybertron: the Autobots and the Decepticons. The former favored a plan to alter the course of their planet and slingshot it away from the Solar System, while the latter wanted to abandon Cybertron and conquer one or more of the inhabited planets of the Solar System. During the war, the leader of the Decepticons, Megatron, was lost when he crash-landed on Earth. The Autobots then won the war and were successful in steering their planet around the Sun, causing it to be rapidly ejected from the star system on a course taking it out of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Autobot faction won the war and were successful in steering their planet around the Sun, causing it to be rapidly ejected from the star system on a course taking it out of the Milky Way Galaxy. However, the fighting and subsequent maneuvering of the planet left Cybertron with an energy crisis. Autobot leader Optimus Prime led a contingent of his people to Earth in an effort to find fuel, but their ship was sabotaged by a party of Decepticons led by the vengeful Megatron, causing it to crash into Earth. As the ship buried itself deep into the ground, the robots were all damaged, and the ship responded with emergency protocols, shocking everyone everyone aboard into stasis mode for repairs. However, low on energy, the ship would not be able to reawaken and complete those repairs for millions of years.

The Voormis gained their freedom from the Serpent People. They created a kingdom on the surface of Hyperborea (modern-day Greenland), based around the worship of Tsathoggua.

Rhan-Tegoth arrived on Earth from Yuggoth, and came to dwell in the Arctic. He fed off sacrifices and worship made by primitive natives, but eventually they forgot him and he entered a state of hibernation. Rhan-Tegoth eventually changeed into a statue-like form.

The Great Old One known as Ithaqua (and later as the Wendigo) appeared in Earth’s northernmost regions, resulting in the decline of the Voormis.

The Age of Hominids

2,588,000 years ago

The earliest, primitive hominid tool use dates to this time.

This marked the end of the Pliocene Epoch and the beginning of the Quaternary Epoch, which we are still in. The first part of the Quaternary Epoch was called the Early Pleistocene Division.

2,580,000 years ago

The Quaternary Ice Age began on Earth. (Technically, we are still in this Ice Age to the present day, just between glacial periods.) The Ice Age glaciers returned by the combined power of Ithaqua and Aphoom Zhah. The Voormis civilization in Hyperborea was destroyed first, replaced by equally ill-fated pre-humans from the Old Race. Some great sorcerers, including Zon Mezzamalech, lived in this short-lived pre-human kingdom. The pre-human civilization of Zobna fell next, moving to Lomar in the south and destroying the native cannibal Gnophkehs.

The much-devolved Elder Things, no longer able to resist intense cold as their ancestors did, developed artificial heating to try to survive. Meanwhile, the changing climate convinced the N’Garai, who had been the dominant species on the planet for the past several million years, to leave Earth and return their own dimension.

2,500,000 years ago

The Skrulls arrived on planet Hala, where they discovered two sentient species: the barbaric Kree and peaceful Cotati. To decide which species would represent the planet to the Skrull Empire, they devised a contest: 17 of the Kree were taken to Earth’s Moon, where the Skrulls developed livable conditions in a special “Blue Area,” and 17 of the Cotati were taken to a barren planetoid in another star system, where they did the same. The two groups were given enough supplies for approximately one Earth year, and whichever group had done the best for themselves after that time would be judged the most worthy. At the end of the contest, the Kree had built a great city , while the Cotati had built a beautiful park. Realizing that the Cotati were about to win, the Kree killed their opposition. When this outraged the Skrull delegates, the Kree then massacred them as well. They then stole and copied their technology and within a hundred years began a 500,000 year period of expanding their own empire in the Greater Magellanic Cloud Galaxy.

When the Kree left the Blue Area of the Moon, the Watcher named Uatu established his home there.

Homo habilis evolved in Africa.

2,000,000 years ago

By this time, as Elder Thing civilization continued to decline, they had retreated to their cities on the southernmost tip of South America and the Antarctic regions.

Homo rudolfensis (not a human ancestor) evolved in Africa.

The Kree-Skrull Wars began.

1,900,000 years ago

A species of aliens known as the “Engineers” arrived on Earth and seeded it with their DNA, transforming primitive hominids into a species resembling humans, but taller and very pale. This new species would in time be known by various names, including the “pre-human race,” the “Old Race” and the “Giant-Kings.”

Homo rudolfensis became extinct.

1,850,000 BCE

A pre-human king of Lomar was among those that exchanged minds with one of the Great Race of Yith.

By this time, Homo erectus (not a human ancestor) had evolved in Africa and begun using stone tools.

1,760,000 years ago

In Africa, hominids like Homo habilis began developing more advanced stone tools, including hand axes.

1,750,200 BCE

This was the time of the pre-human wizard Eibon, the greatest wizard of Hyperborea. During his life, the worship of Tsathoggua was driven from Hyperborea by priests of Yhoundeh. Eibon disappeared at the age of 132 during the Yhoundeh inquisitions, and his assistant Cyron of Varaad correlated several of his sorcerous works into the Book of Eibon. Cyron also wrote the Vita Ivonis, an account of Eibon’s life.

1,750,000 BCE

The initial hominid exodus from Africa occurred.

Around this time, the great polar civilizations finally fell. The Elder Things retreated to deep within the Earth, and the people of Lomar were overwhelmed by the Inuto people. The pre-human civilization in Hyperborea splintered, and its surviving peoples were driven south into what would become Europe and eventually further south into Africa. A secret brotherhood saved copies of the Book of Eibon from Hyperborea and took them to mainland Europe. Some Voormis began worshipping Ithaqua, while the rest fled and become known as the Sasquatch and Yeti. The Serpent People began migrating south. Tsathoggua returned to N’kai.

The Lemurian Age / Age of the Dragon Kings

500,000 BCE

The common ancestor of modern humans and Neanderthals lived at this time.

The Serpent People arrived in the microcontinent of Lemuria, where they would become known as the Dragon Kings.

Based on the vision of the Ainulindalë, Eru Ilúvatar created Eä, a new extradimensional universe parallel to our own. The Ainur then left the Timeless Halls forever more and entered the newly created universe of Eä, where they began to create what they saw in the vision of the Ainulindalë. They created the great world of Aman (which would later be known as Asgard) and many other worlds, and crafted stars to fill the empty skies of this new realm. However, they did not yet visit Earth or its universe – the universe which existed before them.

Ten of the Valar took a spouse during this time. Manwë and Varda wed and became the king and queen of the Valar. Others who underwent the bond of marriage included: Aulë and Yavanna, Oromë and Vána, Námo and Vairë, and Irmo and Estë. Five of the Valar did not wed during this age: Melkor, Ulmo, Tulkas, Nienna and Nessa.

140,000 BCE

There was a diaspora of Neanderthals and modern humans at this time.

The first domestication of dogs occurred.

130,000 BCE

An interglacial period began on Earth. What is now the Sahara region in northern Africa soon became crisscrossed by multiple major river systems, eventually allowing modern humans to migrate into this region.

120,000 BCE

Eru Ilúvatar took the Timeless Halls and crafted them into the ash seed that would become Yggdrasil, the World Tree, thus binding Eä to Earth and forming the basis of what will eventually become known as the “Nine Realms.” He turned himself into the “Secret Fire” at the center of Earth and planted the seed of Yggdrasil there to watch over it. He took an interest in humans and began crafting his own version of them out of silvery sapling ash tree branches sprouted from Yggdrasil. He also created the Elves. He did not yet awaken his creations, though.

110,000 BCE

A glacial period began on Earth.

101,000 BCE

The Fourteenth Colony of Kobol had by now become the mighty Kingdom of Nemedis. It was drawn into a war with the nearby Dragon Kings of Lemuria (the Serpent People) that lasted for a thousand years.

100,000 BCE

On Earth, Homo erectus became extinct, while some modern humans migrated from Africa to the Middle East.
