Super summer showdown, round three: the phenomena

The heroes below each have some kind of strange ability or mutant power that sets them apart from ordinary people, and while they may not have the nearly limitless power of some of the earlier heroes, their unique talents do come in handy.

Contest #21: Plastic Man (DC) vs. Mr. Fantastic (Marvel)

These guys can stretch really far. Plastic Man is a bit of a wisenheimer. Mr. Fantastic is a brilliant scientist and leader of the Fantastic Four. Classically coolest: tie. Contest #22: Gypsy (DC) vs. The Invisible Woman (Marvel)

I don’t really know anything about Gypsy except that it looks like she has similar powers to the Invisible Woman, who is the least interesting member of the Fantastic Four. Contest #23: Mister Miracle (DC) vs. Domino (Marvel)

Mister Miracle is an immortal hero whom no bonds can hold. Domino is a mutant whose power is to be lucky. Classically coolest: Mister Miracle. Most badass: tie. Most firepower: Mister Miracle. Most heart: Mister Miracle. Most compelling character: Mister Miracle. Overall winner: Mister Miracle.


Contest #24: Animal Man (DC) vs. Wolfsbane (Marvel)

Animal Man can mimic the abilities of any animal. Wolfsbane can turn completely or partially into a wolf. Classically coolest: Animal Man. Most badass: tie. Most firepower: Animal Man. Most heart: Animal Man. Most compelling character: Animal Man. Overall winner: Animal Man.


Contest #25: Negative Man (DC) vs. Wonder Man (Marvel)

Negative Man can project a negative energy being with super powers out of himself. Wonder Man is filled with ionic energy that gives him special powers. Classically coolest: Negative Man. Most badass: tie. Most firepower: Wonder Man. Most heart: Negative Man. Most compelling character: Negative Man. Overall winner: Negative Man.


Contest #26: Starman (DC) vs. Spider-Woman (Marvel)

Starman (or his current successor, Stargirl) has a “cosmic rod” that gives him super strength and the ability to fly and manipulate energy. Spider-Woman has similar enhanced strength and can shoot “venom blast” energy out of her body thanks to a special serum made from radioactive spider blood. Yes, they’re both derivative, but they’re also both kind of fun. Classically coolest: tie. Most badass: tie. Most firepower: Starman. Most heart: tie. Most compelling character: tie. Overall winner: Starman.


Contest #27: Vixen (DC) vs. Rogue (Marvel)

Vixen could originally imitate the abilities of any animal near her, and eventually became able to imitate the abilities of other superheroes as well. Rogue can absorb the ability of anyone she touches. Classically coolest: tie. Most badass: Rogue. Most firepower: Rogue. Most heart: tie. Most compelling character: Rogue. Overall winner: Rogue.


Contest #28: Black Canary (DC) vs. Banshee (Marvel)

Black Canary is a skilled martial artist who can also attack with a sonic scream. Banshee is an Irish mutant who can scream so hard that the shock waves allow him to fly. Classically coolest: Black Canary. Most badass: Black Canary. Most firepower: tie. Most heart: Black Canary. Most compelling character: Black Canary. Overall winner: Black Canary.


Contest #29: Bumblebee (DC) vs. Wasp (Marvel)

Both of these heroines can shrink to tiny size and shoot energy “stings.” Wasp was a founding member of the Avengers and remains a popular member of the team. Classically coolest: Wasp. Most badass: tie. Most firepower: tie. Most heart: Wasp. Most compelling character: Wasp. Overall winner: Wasp.


Contest #30: The Atom (DC) vs. Ant-Man (Marvel)

Both of these heroes can shrink to very small sizes. Ant-Man, whose real name is Henry Pym, can also grow to giant size and invent homicidal robots. Classically coolest: tie. Most badass: tie. Most firepower: Ant-Man. Most heart: The Atom. Most compelling character: Ant-Man. Overall winner: Ant-Man.
